What is Activated Carbon?
Activated carbon has a random, imperfect structure which is highly porous over a broad range of pore sizes - from visible cracks and crevices to molecular dimensions. This structure gives carbon its very large surface area which allows carbon to absorb a wide range of compounds.
Activated carbon has the strongest physical absorption forces and the highest volume of absorbing porosity of any material known to mankind. Activated carbon can have a surface of greater than 1000m/g. This means 3g of activated carbon can have the surface area of a football field!
How does Activated Carbon deodorize clothing?
When a material absorbs something, it attaches to it by chemical attraction. The huge surface area of activated carbon gives it countless bonding sites. When certain chemicals pass next to the carbon surface, they attach to the surface and are trapped.
Activated carbon is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ("organic" chemicals), as well as things like chlorine. Once all of the bonding sites are filled, an activated charcoal filter stops working. At that point you must replace the filter.
It is used primarily for purifying gases by absorption, solvent recovery, or deodorization and as an antidote to certain poisons.
